Connecting TopstepX

Sync your Topstep accounts automatically with a TopstepX API key.

How it works

TopstepX connects with an API key you generate on Topstep's side. The connection is read-only, your trades sync on their own from there, and we never place or change orders. New fills usually land within about five minutes of a trade closing.

One thing to know up front: Topstep sells API access as its own subscription, separate from your Combine or funded account. It costs $29 a month, or $14.50 with the promo code below. If you would rather not add that, you can import your trades export instead and everything is scored exactly the same way.

1. Get your API key

This part happens entirely on Topstep's side and takes about five minutes.

  1. In TopstepX, open Settings, then the API tab.

  2. Click Link under ProjectX Linking.

  3. Verify your email on the page that opens.

  4. Create your username and password. This is your ProjectX login for the subscription only. It is not the username you enter in TradeDNA.

  5. Go to Subscriptions, then API Access, and subscribe. The promo code topstep brings it to $14.50 a month.

  6. Come back to TopstepX, open Settings and the API tab again, and click Add API Key. If no Add API Key button has appeared yet, click Link again and link your active account from the ProjectX Link Account Dashboard page.

Step 6 is the one people miss. Paying for the subscription does not create a key on its own, so if you have paid and have nothing to paste, this is almost always why.

2. Add the connection in TradeDNA

Go to Settings, then Connections, open the Auto-sync tab, choose Add auto-sync account, and pick TopstepX.

Enter your TopstepX username and the key from step 6, then choose Check key. We verify it right away and list the accounts it can see.

Your TopstepX username was emailed to you when you bought your first Combine, and it is shown top-left in TopstepX next to your account name. It is not the ProjectX login you created at step 4.

3. Pick your accounts

Every account the key can reach is listed, labelled so you can tell an evaluation or funded account from a practice one. Tick the ones you want to track. Practice accounts sync separately from your live results, so bringing one in will not distort your stats.

You can also set a date to sync history from. Leave it empty and we start after your most recent Topstep trade already in TradeDNA, or the last 90 days if there is none, so nothing is counted twice. Trades you imported earlier are never touched.

If the key is not accepted

Two things are worth checking, in this order:

  • The username. Use your TopstepX username, the one emailed to you when you bought your first Combine and shown top-left in TopstepX next to your account name. This is the most common mismatch, because the ProjectX login you created at step 4 is for the subscription and is easy to reach for instead. If the TopstepX one is rejected, try the ProjectX one next.

  • The key itself. Confirm you completed step 6 and clicked Add API Key in TopstepX after subscribing. If the key still will not take, reveal it with the eye icon and copy it by hand rather than using the copy button.

You can revoke the key in TopstepX at any time, and reconnect later with a new one.

Bringing in past trades

The connection backfills history when you first connect. For anything older than that window, go to the Import files tab and upload your TopstepX trades export. The two paths sit alongside each other, and your Combine is graded the same way whichever one your trades arrive through.
